Background of the Study
Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure as President of Nigeria was marked by significant efforts to address the long-standing conflicts in the Niger Delta region. The Niger Delta has historically been a site of oil-related conflicts, militancy, and underdevelopment, which severely affected national security. In an attempt to mitigate these challenges, Jonathan introduced various peace initiatives, including the amnesty program, infrastructural development projects, and military reforms aimed at addressing the root causes of the unrest in the region. These initiatives were intended to reduce militancy, ensure oil production stability, and promote regional development.
Yola, the capital of Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria, has been affected by broader national security issues, including insurgency and the spillover effects of instability in other parts of the country.
